The dangerousness of a communitarianism modelled under the prism of an identity withdrawal in the era of modernization in Africa

The scientific division of the Territories is a political action aimed at allowing social cohesion at the national, sub-regional and/or regional level from a set of small community integrations that can constitute an obstacle to development when the points of views in terms of integration remain divergent over time.

Whether during the pre-colonial, colonial or post-colonial period, Africans have always shown unparalleled hospitality. The westernization of Africa with in particular the spread of doctrines such as capitalism and private property have awakened among Africans a reductionist spirit previously dormant because of the simplicity of life they led.

African solidarity

Communitarianism as a form of identity withdrawal is a model of integration that does not facilitate a real process of development. How many Territories have managed to develop without input from outside? Self-sufficiency in Africa is an unthinkable goal without serious cooperation first among Africans themselves. A community project is not only a matter of natives but that of all those who want to contribute to the well-being of the community. With modernization which imposes a combination of efforts in order to solve the problems of societies, it is very difficult or even impossible to contribute to integral development while being tribalist or egocentric.

The most advanced societies are those that always go beyond the tribal stage to embrace a truly national or community cause. In Africa everyone should feel at home. The willingness to accept others without distinction of tribe or nationality is one of the major challenges essential for any State that aspires to real development in Africa. To be hospitable is to see how to cohabit with the other despite the differences. It means integrating others into our projects, which should not only be a navel affair, but a navel association with a view to satisfying common interests.

The dangers of extroversion

What comes to us from elsewhere should not be above what makes us special. In other words, an African should not marry a culture or a habit from elsewhere to the point of not knowing who he is and where he comes from. The culture of others should help us to know ourselves better. Those who know themselves cannot allow themselves to be counterfeited by unnatural phenomena or quite simply become what they are not. We certainly need others, but this need must not alienate us to the point of taking the place of what made us unique.

Community development depends on a process of integration which itself requires a political will freed from the fear of no longer having enough resources to meet future needs but rather driven by a clear desire to allow peaceful coexistence and regulated by necessary conditions approved and effectively respected by the Member States.
