The contestation of election results on the basis of unfounded arguments for political purposes in a space with a high democratic index, is proof that the political game admits the exploitation of lies both on the side of the winners and the losers, in order to attrack the favour of the people. The protest movements following the 2020 presidential election in the United States have clearly shown that Africa does not have a monopoly on deception and bad faith during and following presidential elections in particular. Even if in large democracies, certain forms of dispute give rise to recounts established according to rules which justify what has a very low probability of happening, namely that elections were stolen from a given candidate, the fact for the African countries of having a bad image due to the poor quality of the organization of certain elections, gave the impression that it is only in Africa that we can witness forms of protests initiated on the basis of “massive frauds " and other irregularities orchestrated sometimes and in places, by foreign influences having a share of responsibility in the weakness of the economies, the political instabilities and a geopolitical situation faltering between deception, State coups and legitimacy.

The 2020 episode in the United States brought new data. Indeed, within a democracy considered complete according to the promoters of the web site which publishes the world sociological atlas, a candidate made the choice to contest the result of an election which was unfavourable to him, subsequently leading to violent mass movements with the aim of re-establishing “a stolen truth”. We could ask ourselves the question of what evidence is based on such allegations and what justifies resorting to an illegitimate means to re-establish “the truth”? Would the reaction have been similar if the election result had been different? Is this not the consequence of a horror of defeat, or a wanton desire to create trouble instead of truly recognizing defeat in front of a candidate who really won?

According to the organizers, nothing palpable certifies any fraud. Some American television channels such as ABC News, NBC News and CNM have even spoken of disinformation to deplore a pitiful attitude. The contradictory reaction which also consisted of revolting during the counting of votes cast during the election would therefore have the real aim to sowing discord, rather than re-establishing a truth so dear to that great democracies who like to give lessons in democracy to the African Nations which are trying as best they can to organize serious elections despite the recurring attacks from supporters of electoral malpractices. And if that malpractices during presidential elections in particular are facts in several sub-Saharan African States in particular, they do not always justify the fact that an election was stolen hence they are only isolated realities which have no major impact on the final results of the elections, unless it is established that these irregularities are sufficient to justify the contrary. It is the similar reality which occur following the 2020 election results in the United States. The fact that a losing candidate located in a region with a high democratic index contests results by using damning words, is tangible proof which justifies that in Africans States, the supposed electoral frauds which are also facts without major impact on the final results, are very often exploited to not recognize the victory of a candidate who really won, thus creating a climate favorable to manipulation, in order to achieve very specific objectives that the results of the electoral vote in the United States in 2024 allows you to better understand. Indeed, the Republican candidate this time victorious after four years of intense, devious and agitated preparations due to his troubles with the justice system, and the personal attacks to which he was subjected by several of his detractors, never failed to tell on several occasions that if he loses, it would mean the election has once again been stolen from him. And it was the same speech before, during and after the election. It is clear that these assertions, without formal proofs at the basis, was a means of influence for political purposes, in a world where all means are allowed to win, and where adversaries will stop at nothing to confiscate a blanket reserved for several, even if they have to let their opponent die of cold in the middle of winter. And it’s the same situation in sub-Saharan Africa in particular where the atmosphere is even more torrid in terms of heat. Opposition candidates who know very well that they cannot win, exploit the slightest irregularities to proclaim themselves winner. Even if these alleged irregularities can be confirmed at the end of a presidential election, particularly by international and national observers, there is not always evidence certifying their superiority compared to the regularities which allowed the victory of the real winners.

It is not by making the public believe on the basis of a set of irregularities that represent nothing compared to the high altitude generated by the votes that were actually expressed that we will succeed in making the people believe that we will not do worse than those who are currently in power. We can even say, given the weak financial means compared to those of the parties in power, and the difficulty in implementing solid coalitions, that the presidential elections in Africa in particular and in sub-Saharan Africa in general, are not always occasions or opportunities for opposition parties to take power, but rather to remind the people, with supporting evidence, of the reality of a set of irregularities, which however do not really certify that an opposition candidate is the winner.

The choice of the people is sovereign, and all authority is of divine origin, whether we like it or not. Image: Vilkasss/pixabay.com

The contestation of election results on the basis of unfounded arguments for political purposes in a space with a high democratic index according to the November 2024 update published on the website of the world sociological atlas, is proof that the political game admits the exploitation of lies both on the side of the winners and the losers, in order to attract the favour of the people. But as the saying goes, “campaign promises [and we add the unfounded accusations] bind those who believe in them or who receive them.”

Despite the voices which predict results known in advance, and those which are at the origin of the obstacles erected to try to prevent the candidates of the opposition parties from freely exercising their rights, the people will vote, with the necessary discernment in order to choose the most acceptable lamentable reality possible everywhere in Africa and especially in Mali, in Guinea Conakry, Burkina Faso, Niger, Gabon, and Cameroon, because the people have needs, and they need Mens able to respond in a more meaningful way to these problems despite the fact that the lack of seriousness and sincerity is a reality in politics.

If the democracies of the United States of America and that of the countries of the European Union, through their good democratic indices speak to the States of sub-Saharan Africa in particular, it should also be said that the fact that lies are there also used to gain power, and as a means of intimidation for political purposes, is an opportunity for African countries to remind these States that they have their share of responsibility in the fact that in Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa in particular, almost all elections are contested. Did they not contribute to fraudulently or not, establishing candidates who would better guarantee their interests?

The quality of democracies depends on the ideologies or real goals sought by those who succeed in taking power by democratic means. If the current American president, namely Mr. Donald Trump, favours a populism which mocks the democracy advocated by his adversaries from the democratic camp in particular, opposition parties in Africa use populism or a political discourse to get people to reject the pretences of democracies touted by the leaders of the ruling parties because according to them, a true democratic system cannot give rise to an hybrid democratic regimes, characterized by significant irregularities that do not allow elections to be free and fair, pressure of all kinds exerted on opposition parties, widespread corruption, feverishness of the State of law, journalists martyred, a dependent justice, and as everywhere else, artificial intelligence at the service of populism and massive frauds which satisfies States and political leaders both in Africa and elsewhere who want to extend their hegemony in the world on the basis of lie, by establishing collaborators in strategic places or Territories, in order to further disseminate in the world a contradiction of true peace, under the cover of a high democratic index and a culpable and strategic neutrality which values a set of States having a share of responsibility in the fact that several African countries in particular remain in a succession of State coups, recurring democratic transitions, and protests following elections which sometimes give rise to claims of victory having no truthful basis.
